A butterfly that lives up to its name when old and worn but quite nicely marked when fresh. It can easily be mistaken for a moth, and indeed many day-flying moths are more brightly marked and butterfly-like than tages. The sexes are not easy to tell apart, but size (the female is larger) is a good indicator and the female is more strongly marked especially with a series of upf white marginal dots.

05_04-34: a male, from the south of the UK. Nicely marked.

0593: a rather drab male with generally obscure markings and little contrast. Altitude 800m.

10071: a male, based on body length and shape. Altitude 780m. Altitude 80m.

18983: a male underside, quite a light brown, I feel, but the underside is so rarely seen so it is hard to say whether this is untypical.

01_10-08: a rare view of the underside showing that it lives up to its name on both surfaces.
